 drawing #1
DID YOU KNOW that cultures from all over the world (who have had no contact with each other)
created mazes that were similar and sometimes almost identical? Drawing #2 is a Native American petroglyph.
It is called the Hemet Stone and is in California. The Hopi Indians and the Pimas utilized this
classic type labyrinth pattern in their art and folklore. Although differences existed within their approaches,
they felt a strong pull toward a similar design.
DID YOU KNOW that Medieval Knights applied labyrinths to their shields believing it
would provide protection in battle? The labyrinth was thought to be of God
and held the powers of the heavens. Drawing #3 is the classic square labyrinth. The
labyrinth can be created in all different shapes such as circles and octagons.
DID YOU KNOW that the square and circular labyrinth have been found on coins dating
as far back as 430 to 67BC?
Drawing #4 is the classic circular labyrinth which, if drawn correctly,
can be created in two continuous lines that cross at only one point.
DID YOU KNOW that ancient societies designed street plans for their cities shaped
like mazes? Hence, if they were invaded, the attackers got lost, trapped, and were unable
to escape. Some cities had underground structures where prisoners were confined with
a wild beast (like a lion) to provide entertainment for the public. This is where the
Minotaur and the maze myth is thought to have originated
